Giving Beyond The Box | “Rhode Island” Box
RHODE ISLAND’S LITTLE BOX OF HOPE
Rhode Island, despite — or perhaps because of — its diminutive size, packs a lot into a little real estate. Riches abound in our neighborhoods: residents from all over the world, unmatched historical buildings, culinary delights, cutting-edge enterprises, cultural and artistic treasures. The founders of our state chose our motto from a Biblical verse that reads, “Take hold of the hope set before us . . . an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
This Little Box of Hope celebrates the heritage of citizens who aimed to make ours a better community. We have founded great schools, children’s homes, hospitals, settlement houses, advocacy organizations, refuges for those escaping persecution, organizations to preserve our environment and so much more. Inside this box are products that save the lives of malnourished children across the planet (Edesia), support caregivers of those stricken with Alzheimer’s (Bellicchi’s biscotti), resettle and employ refugees (Beautiful Day Granola and Sanctuary Herbs), celebrate the rich traditions of our Native American citizens (Tomaquag Museum), provide culinary training to young people involved with the child welfare system (Farm Fresh’s Harvest Kitchen), build schools in Nepal and provide consumers with products that have social impact (Impact Everything), bring the mindful practice of Yoga to those with cognitive challenges, in recovery and served by nonprofit organizations (ShriYoga), and support transportation for elderly residents of Newport (Newport Sock Exchange). The box itself was designed by students from Riverzedge, an arts education program that engages young people in real-world art and graphic design challenges.
